Over the past few years, Transport Canada has been working on amending the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations. One of the proposed amendments would affect the transportation of anhydrous ammonia with farmer-owned nurse tanks. The proposed amendments would make it costlier for farmers to transport anhydrous ammonia while not improving the safe handling of the product.
KAP, along with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, Canadian Canola Growers Association, and Grain Growers of Canada, sent a joint letter to the Minster of Transport highlighting our concerns with the proposed amendments. Six days after our letter, Transport Canada removed the proposed amendments affecting farmers.
