In July 2024, the Government of Manitoba began a consultation on improving the Disaster Financial Assistance program. This cost-sharing program between the federal and provincial governments provides financial assistance to businesses, municipalities, farms, and individuals on uninsured losses resulting from natural disasters.
The program provides important support to farmers in the event of a natural disaster; however, certain policies within the program limit its effectiveness with farm businesses. These concerns include the $2 million yearly gross revenue maximum, farm business ownership definition, and timely compensation payment. KAP provided these comments in letters sent in February and July of 2024 to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
