Fertilizer is an essential component in plant growth. There are concerns amongst farmers that a reduction in fertilizer emission would result in decreased yields.
Fertilizer Emissions Reduction
In 2020, Environment and Climate Change Canada released ‘A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy’. This report outlined the government’s target of a 30% reduction in fertilizer emissions below 2020 levels by 2030.
Since the announcement of this voluntary target, government has heard from various organizations emphasizing the challenges in meeting the 30% target.
KAP will continue to engage with Agriculture and Agri-Canada Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada to highlight concerns farmers have regarding this target.
Carbon Tax
Since the introduction of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act in 2018, KAP has voiced opposition to additional taxation on fuel used for heating farm buildings (e.g., greenhouses and livestock barns) and grain drying.
Most farmers are highly dependent on export markets for selling their products. The application of the carbon tax places farmers at a competitive disadvantage compared to other farmers. Furthermore, the increasing costs associated with the carbon tax can negatively impact net farm income.
KAP is fully supportive of Bill C-234 (An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act). We will continue to advocate for its passage to royal assent.
