AgriStability is one of many tools farmers use to manage their risk on farm. Concerns with the program have centered around equity, complexity, timeliness and predictability.
In November 2020 the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food presented a proposal to her provincial and territorial counterparts on improvements to AgriStability. The proposal included the removal of the reference margin limit and increasing the compensation rate from 70 to 80%.
In December 2020, KAP along with 19 other Manitoba farm groups sent a joint letter to Minister Blaine Pedersen highlighting the importance of accepting the federal proposal.
Update – March 2021
The removal of the reference margin limit was approved in 2021 and the compensation rate increased beginning in the 2023 program year. These changes will improve the effectiveness and decrease the complexity of the program.
